Heavy List fighting and general updates
June 10, 2009 at 11:33 pm | Posted in Miscellaneous | Leave a commentHaving seen the joys of combat archery at the War of the Roses, I have been getting into heavy list fighting now as well. My husband is thrilled, since he’s always wanted me to be a fighter. I’ve been having a lot of fun with the heavy list fighting (not the least of which is showing off magnificent bruises to my horrified co-workers). Of course, putting energy into fighting is, sadly, taking energy away from doing A&S stuff. Not only physical energy, but mental energy too, since this is all new to me. I’ve never been an athletic or well-coordinated person, so it’s quite the effort to fight, and the fact that I am at least a foot shorter and roughly 1/2 the weight of most of my opponents only adds an extra challenge.
I would like to say that I’m making progress on my hairnet, but that would be a lie. I realized I screwed up part of the first one, and I had to completely start over again. That put a major pall on the project, since no one likes having to redo work. The bees, on the other hand, are doing splendidly. The chickens, as always, flourish. And the saltpeter project is currently “settling”. The lye remains too weak to float an egg, and the fact that I realized this afternoon that the cover had been blown off in the wind and it’s been raining all day probably does not bode well.
Alas, it’s war season and good weather. This means that between twice a week heavy list practice, recorder practice, and archery I’m devoting at least four hours (counting the commute) four days a week to SCA stuff. This is leaving me with less time for projects than I would like. But since I can net just as easily in the coziness of my house during February blizzards and the same cannot be said for wielding a sword or crossbow, I guess I’ll just have to take it as it comes.
